Hydrofracking — properly, hydrofracturing — is how we bring a weak well back to life across Montgomery, Frederick, Carroll, Howard, Washington and Baltimore counties. A well in fractured rock only produces what its fractures deliver, and over the years those fractures can silt up, mineralize, or simply never have been generous to begin with. Hydrofracking injects clean water into the well at high pressure, opening existing fractures and clearing the pathways so more water reaches the borehole.
For the right well, the result is a real, lasting jump in yield — at a fraction of the cost of drilling a new well. It is the first thing worth evaluating when a well runs dry in summer, cannot keep up with the household, or has declined over the years. A drilled well in Maryland's fractured-rock country is essentially a collector: the borehole crosses cracks in the bedrock, and those cracks feed it water. When a well underperforms, the problem is usually the plumbing in the rock — fractures that are too tight, partially blocked, or poorly connected to the wider network that holds the water.
Hydrofracking pressurizes the well with clean water — only water — until the pressure opens those fractures and pushes the blockages out of the pathways. Done with real equipment and real pressure, it can connect your borehole to water it was never reaching. Afterward we flush and develop the well, then check the yield so you can see the difference in numbers, not adjectives.
The classic candidates: a well that has slowly declined over years, a well that runs short in late summer when the water table drops, a household that grew past what the well delivers, or a newly drilled well that hit rock but not enough water. In each case, fracking the existing well can be dramatically cheaper than drilling new — no new permit process, no new hole, same wellhead and pressure system.
